THE BIGGEST TRAVEL BARRIERS TO OVERCOME – FRED BUSTS SOME MYTHS

So many travellers don’t turn their travel dreams into reality because they let barriers and concerns get the better of them. My main concerns with tackling ‘the big one’ were not so much concerned with travel (mishaps, what the weather might throw at us, road trains etc.) but in the logistics of getting away. It was simpler things, like what to do with the mail and the house! We were tossing up whether to rent it out for a year or to make it a holiday rental – the latter option would allow us to come back to our own house if something went wrong. In the end, one of the family moved in – problem solved! Let’s take a look at some of the bigger barriers to overcome before hitting the road, and how to leave these excuses in the dust and hit the road full time.

“I DON’T HAVE ENOUGH MONEY”

Not an excuse! I met one couple that travel full time in their motorhome and sometimes find waiting in free camps for the pension to roll over. “When we know we’re going to be in a region for the long-term, we’ll source local work – you can travel full time for less than $200 a week!” They told me.

“HEALTH ISSUES WILL RESTRICT OUR TRAVEL”

Many travellers on the big lap suffer ailing health, in some cases, their illness is why they’re on the road. Consult your doctor on what medication and research how you can power your medical devices on the road e.g. CPAP machines – the advancements in remote power technology has made travelling fulltime so achievable.

“MY CAREER IS ABOUT TO TAKE OFF”

Your career is going to be going to be there for the next 20, 30 or 40 years however, the opportunity to tackle the lap in your prime won’t be – don’t miss what’s literally a once in a life time chance, so many free camps are being shut-down or becoming overcrowded, so enjoy them at their best.

“I CAN’T LEAVE MY PET BEHIND”

Don’t! Travelling with pets is a thriving concept amongst big lappers. More and more parks and free camps are striving towards a pet-friendly approach. Even the concept of temporary “pet-minding” is growing traction.

“I WANT TO SEE MY GRANDKIDS GROW UP”

We live in the golden age of technology, which is why we use Facebook to share our adventure with the family (and keep an eye on what they’re up to). Skype on our iPad allows us to have face-to-face calls with everyone when we get home-sick!

“MY VAN AND TUG WON’T GO THE DISTANCE”

It’s a common misconception you need an off-road capable van to fully appreciate the big lap – not true. Many opt for a smooth tour of sticking to the bitumen, or, safely unhitch and bring camping gear for those hard to reach places – that’s how we made it to the Cape!

“WHAT DO I DO WITH MY HOUSE AND ASSETS?”

Many people completely overestimated how easy was to rent our house and secure our belongings. Everything is insured and will be there if you decide to return – it’s easier than you think!
