Dometic, USA is expanding its Goshen distribution center, closing several others in the region.
Dometic, that distributes products for RVs and boats from a facility at the northeast corner of Century Drive and Kercher Road, will increase the size of that building from 125,000 square feet to 250,000 square feet, said Jim Menefee, vice president of operations for Dometic Americas.
By this we will close leased warehouses in Sturgis, Schoolcraft and Three Rivers, Mich., along with one on C.R. 19, and consolidate those operations at the Goshen site.
"This will put more product from Dometic right in the backyards of our OEMs," Menefee said, referring to original equipment manufacturers. "We're still adding more square footage than what we're closing down, to give us more space to add inventory as the market grows."
Menefee said the expansion is one more sign that the RV industry has fully recovered from the recession of 2009. The distribution center is now sending out up to 45 truckloads a day from the Goshen facility. The change will improve efficiency and please customers by giving them all of their products in one truckload, he said.
About 35 people work at the center now. The move will create "three to five" new jobs, Menefee said, but it further solidifies the company's commitment to the Elkhart area. Dometic now employs 435 at its refrigerator manufacturing plant on Industrial Parkway in Elkhart, a plant it relocated from Sweden in 2009, along with 375 workers at its awning plant in LaGrange.
"This gives us the ability to react much quicker to market demands and improve our customer service" said Dave Schutz, vice president of RV OEM sales and marketing.
Construction crews were on the site Monday preparing the ground for the expansion, which will be added to the south side of the existing structure. The company plans a groundbreaking ceremony at 10 a.m. Wednesday.
