Dometic RV Introduces New Engineering Refrigeration Team

The new team, which includes industry veterans from the appliance and automotive industries, will be focused on developing larger, residential-style RV refrigerators with flexible power sources.

ELKHART, Ind. – Nov. 10, 2015 Dometic Group, global supplier of comfort and convenience products for the recreational vehicle (RV), automotive, truck, marine and lodging industries, has unveiled its new, dedicated team specializing in refrigeration engineering and design. Led by Chief Engineer Tek Lentine, the new Refrigeration Engineering Team will focus on researching, designing and developing RV refrigerators that offer greater fresh food and freezer storage space, without adding weight and bulk.

“Dometic’s versatile new designs will leverage the power of compressor and absorption technology to create flexible solutions for cooling, when on the road, at a campsite, or while dry camping. The new designs will make it easier for RVers to choose between RV battery power, propane gas, generator or shore power, depending on their requirements,” said Lentine.

The new Refrigeration Engineering team includes industry veterans from the appliance and automotive industries. Team leader Tek Lentine is a former design engineer with experience in the appliance and automotive industries, including several years at Whirlpool and Morgan Olson.

Design Engineer Rob Steffens, formerly of Pratt & Whitney and Whirlpool, brings 20 years’ engineering experience; Design Engineer Adam Warble brings 15 years of automotive industry design experience, having worked for Morgan Olson and Alko Kober. Mark Fazi, also a Design Engineer, is an expert in lean, efficient designs, having previously worked for Toyota. Abeer Mujtaba, Senior Product Engineer, brings in-depth compressor experience, in industrial refrigeration and compressor technology. Joining the team as a Designer is Caleb Hernandez, a recent engineering graduate of Central Michigan University.

According to Lentine, RV customers are seeking larger food storage space. “In fact, many are asking for full-size residential fridges to be installed in their RVs. This presents several problems: The fridges do not fit, they need to be secured shut with sturdy straps or makeshift locks, and they are not energy efficient enough for prolonged use with vehicle batteries.”

Dometic is seeking to address these issues with innovative designs and state-of-the-art power configurations. Historically, absorption fridges have been the industry standard because of their ability to run on propane gas or the vehicle battery, offering flexibility while traveling. “However, traditional absorption technology can be frustrating for RVers who are looking for a quicker cool-down period, particularly in hot climates. As part of Dometic’s R&D, we will be looking at, for example, technologies to speed the cool-down process while drawing minimal DC power,” said Lentine.

The new Refrigeration Engineering Team announcement precedes the Recreation Vehicle Industry Association’s (RVIA) National RV Trade Show in Louisville, Ky., from Dec. 1-3. At the show, Dometic will be exhibiting its DMC family of Compressor Refrigerators, which come in 6 or 8 cubic feet, as well as the Dometic CC-40 Refrigerator, which provides 1.3 cubic feet of portable storage.
