Milestones

The basics of Dometic’s current operations was laid as early 1922 when the two Swedish students, Carl Munters and Baltzar von Platen invented absorption technology.

2007

  • Dometic Group acquired the Italian company, SMEV thereby strengthening its position as a global supplier of products for Recreation Vehicles and pleasure boats. Dometic’s turnover after the acquisition of SMEV will amount to 1025 MEUR and the number of employees will increase to approximately 6,000.
  • Dometic acquires the WAECO Group. Net sales for the Dometic Group now total approximately 1000 MEUR and the number of employees amount to 5.800. 

2006

  • Ten millionth refrigerator produced in Dometic's factory in Motala.
  • Dometic acquires Eskimo Ice.

2005

  • The Dometic Group is acquired by funds advised by the European private equity company, BC Partners.

2004

  • Acquisition of German medical refrigeration company TuS Spezialkühlanlagen und Vertrieb GmbH.

2003

  • Acquisition of German Miko Leuchten increases Dometic’s product range with lighting systems.
  • Acquisition of the U.S. company, Taylor Made Environmental, strengthens Dometic’s position as a system supplier to the marine industry.

2002

  • Dometic acquires Electrolux’s Leisure Product operations in Germany and Slovakia. The Dometic Group thereby becomes a complete legal group.
  • Acquisition of SeaLand, the leading U.S. manufacturer of sanitation systems for the pleasure boat industry.

2001

  • Electrolux sells most of its Leisure Products product line to the venture-capital company EQT. The Dometic Group is created.

2000

  • Acquisition of German Seitz, which manufactures windows and doors for recreation vehicles.

1990s

  • Medical refrigeration is developed from a concept to a full-scale business.
  • Development and expansion of operations involving generators for RVs.
  • First water-purification system is developed.

1988

  • Acquisition of A&E Systems Inc., the largest U.S. manufacturer of awnings for recreation vehicles.

1986

  • Origoverken, which produces cookers and ovens for pleasure boats, is acquired.

1985

  • Acquisition of Duo-Therm Corporation, which produces air-conditioning and heating equipment for RVs.

1980s

  • Very strong demand for RV refrigerators following the first oil crisis. Successful introduction on the so-called after-market, that is sales to end-consumers via dealers. An electronic refrigerator that automatically selects the most appropriate method of operation is introduced as a world innovation.

1973

  • Acquisition of Siegen Metallwarenfabrik in Germany, which entails a complementary model, especially in the German market.

1970s

  • The product line for caravans and boats expands. Refrigerators for caravans are equipped with 12/120/230-volt armatures that permit the operation of a refrigerator with a car battery, a 120–230-volt network or gasol in a container, Piezo-electrical ignition is introduced on most models.

1960s

  • Absorption refrigeration sees a renaissance due to the substantial demand for refrigerators for caravans. AB Electrolux establishes a subsidiary in the U.S. – Dometic Sales Corporation. The company markets refrigerators for caravans and other recreation equipment under the Dometic brand.

1950s

  • Increased competition results in a focus on improvements. Refrigerators are improved substantially and operate with 30% less energy.Competition from compressor refrigeration technology gets tougher.
  • The first refrigerator for caravans is introduced.

1936

  • The millionth absorption refrigerator is sold.

1930s

  • Refrigerators begin to be regarded as standard items in modern middle-class households. The »people’s refrigerator«, in various sizes and models, is a success and sales volumes set new records every year.

1927

  • Servel Inc., an Electrolux company in the United States, begins to manufacture refrigerators on license for the U.S. market.

1925

  • Electrolux acquires the von Platen-Munters patent and introduces the world's first absorption refrigerator for households. A patent is granted in the U.S. in 1926.

1923

  • Baltzar von Platen and Carl Munters invent the first absorption refrigerator. A patent is granted on March 8, 1923.
