New Run-Dry Protected Seawater Pumps

Heavy-Duty Centrifugal Pumps Prevent Burnout When Water Flow Stops

At the 2009 Miami International Boat Show, Dometic Marine is introducing a new series of reliable, heavy-duty centrifugal water pumps with automatic run-dry protection for its marine air conditioning and crushed-ice systems.

The new PLL-Series pumps contain sensors that detect the interruption of water flow, so that the pump automatically shuts down to protect the components against burnout. When water flow resumes, the pump cycles back on automatically.

The new pumps incorporate a number of design features that ensure long life under continuous operating conditions. The electronically commutated spherical motor, high-density ceramic ball bearing and graphite impeller-bearing cap and dynamically balanced impeller ensure reliable, efficient and whisper-quiet operation.

The highly efficient motor draws five times less amperage than other pumps and creates less heat. It also has built-in automatic protection against overload and low in-rush current.

“These new centrifugal seawater pumps with automatic run-dry protection are ideal for all of the water craft we supply air conditioners to, as interruption of the water supply can be a common occurrence due to debris collecting in the seawater strainer located before the pump water inlet. In addition, houseboats, other shallow-draft vessels, sailboats and high-performance power boats, which may occasionally suck air into the pump when the water intake valve is exposed, are also prime candidates for this technology,” said Charlie Barefoot, vice president of engineering. “It protects the pump against overheating and eventual failure when water flow is interrupted."

The space-saving pump design allows for a simple installation and mounts either horizontally or vertically. The motor removes easily for service without the need to disconnect any hoses.

The PLL-Series pumps are available in two models, either an eight gallon-per-minute (GPM) model that supports 110V-240V world voltages, or a 15 GPM version that runs on either 115V or 230V power.
