CoolBreeze Outdoor Cooling Method

Innovative System Cools Boaters on Deck with Directional Jets of Chilled Air

POMPANO BEACH, Fla. – October 6, 2008 – Dometic unveils a new type of air conditioning system designed to provide cool relief for boat passengers in open spaces above decks.

Developed through innovative engineering, this high-efficiency system blows chilled air through high-velocity directional jets aimed at people in the helm station, outdoor salon, fishing area or other locations. Just when rising temperatures would normally force passengers into air conditioned living space, they continue to enjoy their current location as jets of chilled air automatically start blowing on them.

“We designed this system to meet the special request of Viking Yachts, who wanted a costeffective and efficient way to cool people when enjoying a boat’s outdoor areas on hot days,” said Frank Marciano, president of Dometic Corporation, Environmental Division. “This was a major engineering challenge since it is impractical to use traditional air conditioning techniques to comfort/condition an outdoor area. Flooding the entire space with cooled air would require a grossly oversized air conditioning plant with enormous power consumption. Instead, our engineering team devised a way to cool the people, not the space, by blowing high-velocity chilled air directly onto them.”

CoolBreeze’s two-stage operation is totally automatic, based on two user-defined set points. When the temperature rises to the lower set point, the controller activates the blowers only to cool people by the jetted movement of ambient air. When the temperature rises to the higher set point, the second stage activates the compressor to chill the jetted air. Likewise, when the temperature drops below  the higher set point, the system switches to blower-only mode and then off when the temperature drops below the lower set point.

“We’ve used the CoolBreeze while fishing in 95-degree heat and you can really feel the strength of the air coming down on you from the small ducts,” said Aubrey Dauterive of New Iberia, La., who recently purchased one of the first Viking 60 Convertible yachts with the CoolBreeze system installed. “This system cools you better than any other I’ve seen. The four adjustable vents, compared to the one long vent I’ve experienced on other boats, make all the difference.”

CoolBreeze can easily be installed on boats of all types and sizes. It is available as factory-installed OEM equipment and it can be retrofitted onto existing boats as an aftermarket product. CoolBreeze uses environmentally safe R-417A refrigerant.
