Australia has some of the most extraordinary locations in the world. But sometimes getting to these locations isn’t easy. These are our most extreme adventure locations to explore in Australia:

Arnhem Land - Northern territory

Arnhem Land is in the Northern Territory, approximately 780 km from Darwin. To visit Arnhem Land, you need to apply for a permit from the Northern Land Council or organise a tour with an operator who has permission to enter the region. It’s full of amazing scenery, great fishing spots, and many historical indigenous sites. If you’re looking to explore the region in a fourwheel drive, it is very important to know that this part of Australia is extremely dangerous and only those with a high-level of off-roading knowledge and experience should attempt it. There are only a few ways to enter Arnhem Land with a vehicle. One of these being the East Alligator river dividing Jabiru and Arnhem Land. At high tide, it’s very dangerous to cross and has claimed many vehicles over the years, which is why it is so important to pack appropriate recovery equipment in case of emergency. Once you’re in the belly of Arnhem Land, the four-wheel drive tracks are full of fallen trees, logs, deep river crossings, and not to mention; saltwater crocodiles. In 2019, the Patriot Games team set off on the journey to take on Arnhem Land. They were the first convoy to take on Arnhem Land after the wet season that year and tackled the harsh terrain with the RAM2500 and a 6x6 LC79 Landcruiser leading the way.

Cape York - North Queensland

If you are looking for an extreme adventure location, then look no further than Cape York. During Season 1 of Patriot Games, the crew headed north on a research and development trip to test how our very own Patriot Campers would handle some of the toughest off-road conditions Australia has to offer. These are our experiences from travelling to the Cape and what you can expect if you ever decide to make the trip. The Cape York Peninsula is the northernmost point of the Australian continent separating Australia from the Torres Strait Islands. Aside from being one of the most iconic locations in Australia, it also lays claim to one of the most iconic four-wheel tracks, the ‘Old Telegraph Track’. This four-wheel drive track is like no other. The track spans over 350 km and is only accessible during the dry season, which is typically between May and November. Travelling this track in a capable four-wheel drive is essential, particularly once you reach Gunshot Creek. Attempting to drive at Gunshot is truly for adrenaline seekers. This is one of the highlights of travelling to Cape York and you better be ready for plenty of boggings once you reach this point. After completing the Old Telegraph Track, you can experience some of the most spectacular scenery Australia has to offer.

The Simpson desert - South Australia, Northern Territory, Queensland

If you are looking for adventure in Australia, there's nothing quite as extreme as crossing the Simpson desert. During Season 3 of Patriot Games, the team were on their way to compete in the famous Finke desert race. To make it there on time they had to make the 2500 km journey across the Simpson desert after the biggest flood since 1974. If you’re thinking about crossing the Simpson, you always need to expect the harshest conditions. Crossing the Simpson Desert takes a minimum of four days and demands a high clearance fourwheel drive. The Simpson is mostly uninhabited and covers more than 143,000 km2, making it the largest parallel sand dune desert in the world.
It extends over three borders, including South Australia, Northern Territory and Queensland. The Simpson Desert is generally closed between December 1 and March 15 due to heavy rain, which often sparks major inland flooding, making it unsafe for travellers. Travelling the Simpson is not for the faint of heart, with steep sand dunes and soaring temperatures, this desert will put any explorer to the test.
