PROBLEM: Green Tank Effect. When I first fill up a virgin fuel tank, the tank will not fill without the nozzle constantly shut off after a few seconds.
This is due to the tank being virgin or green and called the “green tank effect”. The first time fuel enters a tank, there is no hydrocarbon vapor present in the tank. Therefore, the first fuel that enters the tank expands rapidly to fill the void and thus pressure builds rapidly and the ICV shuts and the fuel backs up to the nozzle and shuts it off. To resolve, fill the tank with a ~½ gallon of fuel and leave for 15-30 minutes. The tank should now fill normally.
