- Ode to Apres: Fill Your Cup
Fill Your Cup
There are some things out of our control – like the morning traffic report and the weather forecast. Sun crust or powder? Socked in with biting winds or bluebird skies, with a chance of sunburn? Not up to us. What can we control? Good company, lasting conversation, and soothing drinks at the end of the day.
Summer may offer warmth and days that seem to last forever, but the season also brings unrelenting heat, smog, and mosquitoes. While winter may be lacking heat, it rectifies with a soothing and quiet calm. Celebrate the wide-open skies at the tailgate or at the end of the trail for the reward of the best sunsets of the year. Snow absorbs the sounds of the surrounding hustle and bustle, and with them, our worries.
As shadows fall earlier and longer across the snow, après lengthens and pours deepen. A setting sun signals a time to reflect and relax, save for headlamp-fueled-fun.
More time to fill our cups and rejoice in the day’s activity, regardless of how much activity took place. Just prior, you may have been cursing your decision to break deep snow for miles, or to break a sweat in the chest- burning cold. With a warm cocoa or cold beer in hand, you can savor the highlights of the day even as the day’s low points begin to take on the soft reds and ambers of the alpenglow.
To enjoy winter fully, preparation is paramount, and insulation is key – for both outerwear and drinkware. With a hot drink and a furry companion by your side, après can extend for hours under the stars. The best evenings are often unplanned, so keep those layers, lagers, and hot cocoa packets stocked. Toast to the dog days of winter, whenever and wherever the thirst arises.
So, pour warmth into your cup this winter, put those phones down, and your drinks up.
