Christopher, aka Chippa, Wilson is a daring Australian free surfer who sent shockwaves through the surf community with his breathtaking surf film edits, pushing the boundaries of the sport to new and unexplored realms.

Originally from the sun-kissed shores of Cabarita Beach, Australia, Chippa’s spirit thrives on the thrill of surfing, adventure, and the freedom of life on the move.

Always keen for a road trip, Chippa shares his top tips and tricks for planning and embarking on the ultimate journey.

How to get started with road tripping

There’s something undeniably thrilling about the open road, the wind in your hair, and the freedom to explore. A road trip promises a sense of adventure like no other, where every turn can lead to breathtaking landscapes, hidden gems, and unforgettable memories. And the best part? Everything is up to you. You decide where to go, where to stop along the way, how long you’ll be on the road, and most importantly, which road trip snacks you’ll bring along.

But before you rev up the engine and set off on your journey, careful planning and efficient gear management are key to ensuring a smooth and enjoyable experience. So, fasten your seatbelt, gather your wanderlust, and let’s embark on an unforgettable journey together, where the thrill of the open road awaits.

Managing your gear

When heading out on the road, it’s important to keep your gear organized, so you don’t face the headache of trying to find something amidst a pile of unorganized belongings. Start by creating a detailed checklist of all the essentials you’ll need, such as clothing, toiletries, camping equipment and entertainment options.

Pack strategically and utilize storage solutions to keep things organized. Chippa recommends categorizing storage boxes and keeping them clean and tidy; the Dometic GO Hard Storage 50L is perfect for this.
With a well-organized gear setup, you’ll be ready to embark on your road trip with peace of mind.

Staying healthy and energized on the road

On long road trips, it can be tough to stay healthy and energized. Sometimes, we can be more concerned about getting to our destination than nourishing our bodies. Chippa’s best tip for staying energized is to not overdo the morning coffee; one too many will make you crash out well before your long highway hauls.

By drinking more water and staying hydrated you will feel more energized and alert. Snacks on the road like nuts, fruit, or a sandwich can help hold you over if you’re feeling peckish before you reach your destination.
To make sure you always have fresh food available on your trip, try out a portable fridge/freezer like the CFX3 – perfect for everything from long days on the road to lengthy journeys off the grid.

Chippa’s top camp spots in Australia

Picturesque views coupled with ideal wind and wave conditions make Australia a top destination for surfers. But in a country with endless coastlines how can you decide on just one place? Luckily, Chippa shared 5 of his favourite Australian surf and camp spots with us:

1. Northeast Tasmania – A place he called home for many years, Chippa says that Northeast Tasmania is one of the most stunning places he’s been to. With orange algae covered granite rocks and the bright blue ocean, you may feel as if you are looking at a painting. After hitting the waves, an inland tour to discover the rainforest and plethora of waterfalls is a must.

2. West Coast Tasmania – This area is best visited during summertime to avoid the extreme swells and winds during winter. Once summer hits, you can head here to enjoy its natural beauty and hit the waves. The 4WD tracks here are prominent and endless sand beaches make it an ideal location for adventure. Just make sure you have a radio and the correct 4WD gear, as you could potentially get into a sticky situation on some tracks.
Chippa recommends taking it easy once you’re off the beaten track. Be careful whilst driving as there are many creatures who call Tasmania home and hang roadside at night. Drive slow and please check the pouch of any kangaroos that have been hit by a car.

3. Southern NSW – Known for its friendly and relaxed surf culture, in NSW everyone is welcome to ride the waves. Ideal for beginners and experts alike, you’ll find a plethora of diverse wave breaks here.

4. Western Australia – With an enormous, diverse coastline, there are plenty of places to discover in Western Australia. Chippa recommends checking out Northern WA, where you’ll find yourself in harsh environments, only to suddenly come across the most beautiful water holes where life thrives.

5. The Great Australian Bite – Waking up to breathtaking cliffside views over the Indian Ocean should be on everyone’s bucket list. This is where the Australian desert meets the sea – a truly special place.

Living the mobile lifestyle

Mobile living unveils a boundless realm of discovery, where every turn of the wheel brings new discoveries and unforgettable memories. For Chippa, the open road embodies freedom—a life unburdened by obligations or constraints. Each morning, the freedom to decide on the next destination unfolds without stress or pressure. Another upside of being on the road is connecting with friends and strangers alike. The beauty lies in the unknown, not knowing who you'll encounter and the profound impact they may have on your journey. The possibilities are vast, the experiences are extraordinary, and the bonds formed along the way are nothing short of magical.
