19 questions
Under certain conditions, all awnings will suffer from internal condensation.
Condensation is created by moist warm air coming into contact with a cool surface. This moisture condenses creating water. Depending upon the conditions, condensation could be quite severe and is commonly mistaken for leaking, especially as it can run down the inside of the roof and drip off ties, tapes and other internal fittings. Most condensation occurs in the off-season – early Spring, Autumn, Winter.
Primary causes of condensation are:
Moisture in the ground
Moisture in the air
The weather
People sleeping in the awning
An adult can easily produce 1L of water over 12 hours through breathing
Heaters being used in the awning
Cooking in the awning
Exhaust vents from the vehicle into the awning
Wet items – coats, jackets, towels or even wet dogs
Reduce condensation by:
Avoiding pitches on wet ground
Maintaining good ventilation
Turning off heaters used in the awning
Not storing wet items inside the awning
Roof linings are also available for many of our awnings, this accessory helps reduce condensation by regulating the temperature inside the awning, catching any drips that fall from the roof and allowing the water to dissipate when conditions improve.
Dometic awnings using Weathershield™ All-Season material will experience reduced condensation, this is a breathable material more suited to out of season caravanning.
Pole spring links are considered a consumable part and can easily be replaced if broken. They are typically broken by dropping/dragging the poles and general wear and tear.
To purchase replacement pole springs, we recommend contacting a Dometic authorised repair centre or your supplying retailer.
Awning zips should be treated with care, use two hands to close and open and never tread on them. Never force a zip. The awning should always be pegged with the zips closed to ensure they will close correctly and without force. Panels can be crossed pegged to avoid excess stress on the zip.
If your zips are stiff or sticking, apply silicone spray to aid with lubrication.
We use a premium window material designed to give the clearest view out. Cloudy marks can sometimes form on the window material if packed slightly damp, this can be resolved by tensioning the awning and heat from the sun when next setup. Deeper marks, such as zip marks and folds, can be improved by applying heat directly to the window with a hair dryer.
The composition of the material means that there may be some impressions in the window, particularly after storage and folding. These are not faults. We suggest, particularly in cold conditions, and certainly in sub-zero temperatures, that the awning is thoroughly warmed up before setting up.
Our awning windows have been tested to -20°C but it is essential that the windows are prewarmed before unfolding. Before unfolding the windows can be warmed up by bringing the awning into a warm vehicle, or by applying heat directly to the windows with a hair dryer or similar appliance.
Repairs to the awning flysheet should be made by a Dometic authorized repair centre or your supplying retailer. Repairs and alterations made by an unauthorized company may invalidate the guarantee.
Dometic recommend that Super Hydrophobic Spray is applied to the flysheet material on an annual basis. Not only will this ensure that the awning remains waterproof, it will also create an extra layer of resistance to UV damage, prolonging the life of an awning.
If any seam taping has been damaged or come loose, we would recommend it is repaired using Seam Sealant. This is easily applied and results in a colorless and flexible repair.
AirFrame awnings consist of a network of interconnected AirPoles which can be isolated and removed, if required, for testing or replacement.
The inflatable frame of a Dometic Air Awning consists of three layers. The outer sleeve, as seen from inside the awning, this is stitched into the awning itself and cannot be removed. Within this is the removable sleeve (pictured) and the internal inflatable bladder.
When replacing a removable sleeve or inflatable bladder, you will need to identify the part number. The part number is printed on to the white label stitched onto the protective Velcro wrap-around located at the end of the AirPole. In the example below the part number is D400-1 from 2019.
When ordering the part from a Dometic retailer or from Dometic Customer Services, you will need to quote this part number and state if you require the inflatable bladder, the removable sleeve or both.
An inflatable awning is the perfect accessory for your caravan. Whether it's a place to lose your wet coat and muddy shoes, an extra sleeping area for guests, or a luxurious extension of your caravan's living space, a Dometic awning is key to many happy vacations and breaks away.
Simply print this handy guide out, fill in your caravan's measurements and visit your local Dometic awning stockist to find the perfect awning for your van.
Dometic Caravan Awnings
Attach by simply sliding the keder into your caravan's awning rail.
A: The height to the awning rail from the ground. Measure this to ensure your vehicle attachment height is within the tolerances our caravan awnings allow for. Dometic awnings are suitable for caravans with attachment heights between 235-250cm.
Note: If your A measurement is greater than 250cm consider one of our static motorhome awnings, available in a range of heights up to 310cm.
B: The length of the straight section of awning rail. This measurement determines which size awning you can purchase. Dometic awnings are not suitable for curved or bent sections of awning rail. E.g. An Ace AIR Pro 400 requires a minimum of 400cm of straight awning rail.
C: The distance between the end of the straight section of awning rail and the edge of the door. Ensure you have enough space to allow for the rear sealing pad of the of your awning to fit between the edge of the door and the end of the straight section of awning rail. We recommend at least 25cm.
Note: The awning can cross a window, whilst it may obstruct usage it will not damage the window or effect the awning's performance.
An inflatable awning is the perfect accessory for your motorhome. Whether it's a place to lose your wet coat and muddy shoes, an extra sleeping area for guests, or a luxurious extension of your motorhome's living space, a Dometic awning is key to many happy vacations and breaks away.
The team here at Dometic have put our heads together and come up with some top tips to ensure you find the perfect awning for your motorhome.
Static Awnings
Attach by simply sliding the keder into your motorhome's cassette awning or fixed awning rail. You must take the awning down before you go exploring in your motorhome.
A: The height to the awning rail from the ground is crucial to determine which height of awning will best suit your motorhome, ensure you measure from level ground without chocks. Dometic awnings are available in five different heights;
S: 235-250 cm
L: 250-265 cm
XL: 265-280 cm
XXL: 280-295 cm
XXXL: 295-310 cm
B: The length of the awning rail determines which size of awning you can purchase. You must have enough awning rail to accommodate the size of Kampa Dometic awning that you wish to buy.
C: The distance between the top of your door and the awning rail. Kampa Dometic awnings require 15cm between the door and awning rail. This allows enough space for an AirPole to fit against the motorhome without interfering with the door.
D: The distance between the end of the awning rail and the edge of the door. Ensure you have enough space to allow for the rear sealing pad of the of your awning to fit between the edge of the door and the end of the awning rail. We recommend at least 25cm for Dometic static awnings.
Drive-Away Awnings
Attaching a drive-away awning using the Guy Line Method (throw the pre-attached guy lines over the vehicle and secure to tension the connecting tunnel), follow A & B.
Attaching to a cassette awning or fixed awning rail using a Drive-Away Kit, follow C & D.
All drive-away awnings can be left up to reserve your pitch whilst you explore the local area.
A: The height to the motorhome roof from the ground is crucial to determine which height of awning will best suit your motorhome. Dometic Drive-Away awnings are available in a range of heights, designed to fit vehicles from 180 cm up to 310 cm from the ground.
B: The length of the vehicle roof determines which size of awning you can purchase. Ensure the awning tunnel clears any obstructions such as the vehicle door, wheel arches and cassette awning (if present). It's perfectly fine for Dometic awnings to cross windows.
*For panel vans, the measurement of the sliding door may be useful for finding best tunnel fit.
C: The height to the awning rail from the ground is crucial to determine which height of awning will best suit your motorhome. Dometic Drive-Away awnings are available in a range of heights, designed to fit vehicles from 180 cm up to 310 cm from the ground.
D: The length of the awning rail determines which size of awning you can purchase. You must have enough awning rail to accommodate the size of Dometic awning that you wish to buy.
Drive-away kits offer a secure way to attach your awning to your vehicle whilst still allowing you to easily drive away.
Simply connect the figure-of-8 strip to the keder along one edge before attaching the awning beading along the other. To drive away, simply slide the figure-of-8 out of position.
What size Drive-Away Kit do I need?

Warranty Repairs:
Awning repairs should only be made by a company recommended by Dometic or the supplying retailer. Unauthorised repairs and/or alterations may invalidate the warranty.
Dirty awnings can be washed using clean water and a soft brush. Do not scrub and never use detergents.
If this does not clean the awning, we recommend applying awning cleaner, this is available from your supplying retailer or authorized repair centre. It is always best to first test a cleaning product on a part of the awning you cannot see in case of any adverse effects the cleaner may cause.
Bird lime and tree sap should be removed as soon as possible to prevent permanent damage to the material.
This FAQ applies to awnings constructed using the following materials:
Weathershield 63D
Weathershield 68D
Weathershield 150D
Weathershield Pro
Weathershield All-Season
Weathershield PVC
All awning seams are sealed during production with a PVC tape, applied at a high temperature to ensure permanent attachment.
If you believe that your awning is suffering from water ingress, not condensation, inspect the condition of the tape in the area affected. The tape is transparent, so maybe hard to see until you look closely at the seam.
If any seam taping has been damaged or come loose, we would recommend it is repaired using Seam Sealant. This is easily applied and results in a colorless and flexible repair.
An example of broken PVC tape:
If there is no damage to the tape, but you are still experiencing suspected water ingress, Dometic recommends applying Super Hydrophobic Spray to the affected area. Not only will this ensure that the awning remains waterproof, it will also create an extra layer of resistance to UV damage, prolonging the life of an awning.
Occasionally, the connection between the connecting hoses and the isolation valves can work themselves loose. Each awning is fully inflated and tested before leaving our factory but the repeated folding, transporting, unfolding and setting up process can sometimes pull on the connection causing it to loosen. This is not a fault with the awning but a maintenance procedure that may have to be performed from time to time.
If you suspect that the awning may be leaking some air then it is more than likely that one, or more of the connections will need to be adjusted. Follow this simple procedure:
Inflate the awning fully.
Go inside the awning and close all of the isolation valves.
Wait for a period of time and recheck the pressure in all the AirPoles by squeezing the poles. If an AirPole has lost pressure, then the seal between one of the connecting hoses and the isolation valves may have become loose.
Identify the affected AirPole and the adjacent isolation valves, there may be more than one valve. Keep the isolation valve closed and fully unscrew the collar on the deflated AirPole side of the valve. This will reveal the push-fit element of the valve and the conical washer.
Ensure that the connecting hose is fully pushed onto the valve.
Slide the conical washer up towards the screw thread on the valve and then screw the collar onto the valve. The washer is conical, and the smaller diameter side must face towards the collar. Screw hand tight then turn a further half turn with the supplied spanner. Over-tightening will not improve and may adversely affect the seal.
Repeat for any other isolation valves on the AirPole.
Open all the isolation valves inside the awning, the AirPole will refill with air. Inflate the awning to the correct pressure.

Does the Dometic awning on your "new" used campervan looks as if it was not carefully maintained? Would you like another colour, for a change? Or do you want to clean the awning fabric on the floor, or have it cleaned by a specialist? No problem whatsoever, Dometic awning fabrics can be detached and, naturally, they can be replaced as well. We recommend you to put the "renovation" into the hands of your Dometic service partner. He is well versed in this matter and will get the job done for you in a minimum of time.
Small or large caravan, rv or campervan – Dometic has a tailor-made awning solution for every demand. The following table gives you a first, general overview of the available options. Your choice will depend on the construction of your rv and, of course, on how much comfort you want.
Here are the three most important criteria to consider before you take your buying decision:
Roof or wall mounting: Which type of fastening fits your vehicle?
Manual or electric: Do you want an awning that slides out automatically at the touch of a button, or do you prefer manual crank operation?
Once these three questions have been answered, you can proceed with the detailed planning. Choose the matching awning width and extension, the colour of the housing and the awning fabric. Then decide about the extras you want. Our awning accessory range gives you a whole world of possibilities.
To make sure that no recreational vehicle needs to remain without an awning, the Dometic range includes awnings for wall mounting as well as for roof mounting. Which fastening method is applicable in your case, will depend on the construction of your vehicle. We recommend you to play safe and seek advice from an expert! Your Dometic dealer should be able to advise you on this matter and will be able to tell you where and how your awning can be fitted.
Impeccable installation results with vehicle-specific adapters
Vehicle walls and roofs are, among other things, design elements. That means they can have different shapes. With a comprehensive range of adapters Dometic ensures that the vehicle and the awning are perfectly coordinated, so you will get impeccable installation results.
What about the awning size and weight?
The size of the awning depends on the vehicle length and weight is another factor that needs to be taken into account. The longer the awning is the heavier it will be, of course. The spectrum ranges from 11 kg for the smallest models to 58.5 kg for the big ones.
You want to use your awning not only when the sun is shining, but also when the weather is unstable. Aware of this, we have added smart technology and practical accessories to make our products weather-resistant. Showers of rain and gusts of wind are no reason to cancel a barbeque party or cosy get-together, but what happens in heavy rain or stormy weather?
In order to enjoy the comfort of your awning in complete peace of mind, you should know how the weather protection on your awning model works. Which safety features are already included, and what precautions should you take yourself to prevent damage to your awning?
Golden rule: never leave the awning unattended for a long time! You should by no means leave your awning unattended for a long time. After all, it's hard to predict what the weather's going to do in your absence. So, before you are heading for the town or beach, remember to roll up the awning before you leave! The only exception to the rule is when you have set up an awning tent (MyRoom or CampRoom) and thus created a sturdy, weather-proof construction
Special Case PW 3800
Our wall awning PerfectWall PW 3800 deserves a chapter of its own. This special model can be extended without using the integrated support legs for a short stop in calm weather. You can also add a wind sensor (optional accessory) to let your awning retract automatically as when the wind begins to blow.
In case of a longer stay it is worthwhile to set up the support legs. Alternatively, you can anchor the awning firmly to the ground with the WeatherKit supplied with each unit. It gives the awning so much stability that you can switch off the wind sensor without worries. In this way you disable the automatic retraction function, so you can enjoy the shade of your awning at all times, even in changing wind conditions.
Protect larger Awnings with the tension rafter
If you have a larger awning (4 metres or longer), you should secure the centre section with the tension rafter supplied with each unit. This prevents the awning from turning inwards in strong wind. It also avoids sagging of the awning fabric when water has built up on top in heavy rain. Installation is quick and easy. Simply push the tie rod together, put one end into the cradle on the housing and let the other end click in place in the lead rail.
What do you do when the low sun is glaring in, when heavy rain gets under your awning roof from the front or side, or when you are bothered by passers-by peering in? With our accessory products SunProtect, RainProtect and Rollo + you are well equipped in such situations. Once they have been fitted in place, you can sit back, relax and enjoy the most precious days of the year.
SunProtect
SunProtect is a transparent screen fabric that lets the light through and keeps the heat out. It is available as a front panel or side panel. The front panel has an extension of 1.40 metres and can be supplied for various awning widths. The side panel can be fitted either to the right or left of the awning. There's a matching SunProtect for all Dometic awnings.
RainProtect
RainProtect is made from a grey, water- and wind-proof PVC material. Here again, the front and the side panels are available in different sizes. The front panel is non-transparent, the side panels (also suitable for use left or right) have a panoramic window. They extend down to the ground to provide optimal protection against moisture.
ROLLO +
Our accessory product Rollo + is a practical sun and privacy protection blind that can be fitted to the lead rail of just about every wall awning in the Dometic range. It can be positioned to any height and conveniently rolled up back in place after use. To guarantee a firm hold, you can fix your Rollo + to the support legs of your awning, or secure it to the ground with pegs.
Rollo + is available in lengths of 2.60 m, 3.00 m, 3.50 m and 4.00 m. You can choose between two colours – white or grey.
Do you want to convert your awning into an awning tent to create an extra room that can be used in all weathers? Our accessory range gives you a smart solution that can be set up with little effort by only one person.
CAMPROOM - RV Awning Room
If you have opted for a cassette awning with support legs, our CampRoom makes a great awning tent for you. The comfortable extra room in front of your vehicle can be set up in a matter of minutes, by only one person. If you cover the underside of the vehicle with a standard supplied skirt you will get a completely waterproof and wind-breaking living space.
The CampRoom is composed of two packages; one for the front (including the skirt, pegs and ropes) and one for the two side panels (including the clamp profiles, pegs and ropes). There's a practical storage bag for both packages.
