Which battery-batteries can be used?

There are different type of batteries which can be used as a household battery feeding your interior consumers, and they all have their specific technology, structure, properties, lifetime, advantages, dis-advantages, capacity, and application preferences.

Lead-Acid, the most common battery technology

Advantage:

  • Lowest in price

Dis-advantage:

  • Heavy in weight
  • Must be maintained by adding fluid
  • Increased self-discharge requires constant recharging, otherwise sulfation !
  • Strong loss of capacity at low temperatures
  • Installation in a ventilated area, out of the interior
  • Installation always upright
  • Usable capacity 100%, but only in case of small discharge currents and with uncertain lifecycles.

AGM, Absorbent Glass Mat. AGM batteries are advanced lead-acid batteries.

Advantage:

  • Better in cycling and inverter use
  • Price in the middle
  • Maintenance free
  • Installation in the interior or on the side possible
  • Usable capacity 50% of total capacity (50A for a 100Ah battery)

Dis-advantage:

  • Heavy in weight
  • Usable capacity 100%, but only in case of small discharge currents and with uncertain lifecycles.

GEL, are called “GEL” because they use silica (or sand) to turn the acid inside the battery into a liquid

Advantage:

  • Better in cycling and inverter use
  • Price in the middle, above AGM
  • Maintenance free
  • Installation in the interior or on the side possible
  • Usable capacity 50% of total capacity (50A for a 100Ah battery)

Dis-advantage:

  • Heavier than AGM

LFP, Lithium Ferro (iron) Phosphate, LiFePO4, offer lots of benefits compared to lead-acid batteries and other type of batteries.

Advantage:

  • Highest standard in battery technology
  • High Energy density and Low weight (1/3 of the weight and ½ space requirement vs a Lead Acid battery)
  • Maintenance free
  • Installation in the interior advisable and on the side possible
  • Usable capacity up to 100% of total capacity (deep discharge possible to a minimum) Lifetime (charge/discharge cycles) approx. 3-4x longer than lead-acid battery
  • No need to store fully charged

Dis-advantage:

  • Price highest in comparison to standard lead-acid batteries
