Getting outdoors with Owen Wright

Travelling around Australia and the globe is a huge part of Professional Surfer and Dometic Outdoor Ambassador Owen Wright’s life.

Growing up in the town of Culburra in New South Wales, Australia, Owen’s considered to be one of the world’s best surfers, having a vast series of career highlights competing in the World Surf League events and even won a bronze medal at the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympic Games.

He comes from a family of professional surfers. His sister Tyler is a two-time World Champion among women and his brother Mikey competes at a professional level.

Owen has a busy career, a young family, and a passion for the outdoors.
“I grew up in a surfing family that travelled the east coast, camping in a bus at nearly every coastal town. Those are some of my favourite childhood memories,” Owen said.

It’s not always an easy task but using Dometic Outdoor gear has helped Owen, his singer and songwriter wife, Kita Alexander, and their two young children, Vali and Rumi, get outdoors easily.

“Dometic’s wide range of products make outdoor living so much more luxurious than when I was a kid. I’m so excited to share outdoor experiences with my own son and daughter and keep the adventuring alive and well in the Wright family. I encourage everyone to get out there and experience the outdoors,” Owen said.

“Travelling away on tour, you do big stints away from your family, so when I come home, I like to really give them the full-on dad experience, get out and about with them, go outdoors.”

Since the launch of the new Dometic Go collection, Owen has been able to get out more for both day trips and camping weekends away.
Some of his favourite products from the collection are the Dometic Go Compact Camp Table, due to its ability to be used for multiple uses as it can be changed to three heights, and the Dometic Go Camp Blanket, which has been a big hit for the kids due to its versatility.

“The Dometic Go range has everything in it. You’ve got tables, bench seats, comfort seats, blankets that you can roll out on the ground, coolers, the big box that you can put your wetsuit in, it’s literally all there. You’re pretty much like, ‘alright, I’m pretty much set for what I need to do today, tonight’. There’s not too much else you need,” Owen said.

“You can use it at home, day trips, overnight camp trips. It’s versatile. You can use them anywhere. It just makes everything so easy when you get there. Unzip, pack it out on the bench. The kids are happy, the wife is happy, and I’m heading out for a surf. Let’s go!”

One of Owen’s other favourite Dometic Outdoor products is the Dometic Stradbroke 4 TC Air, a spacious 4-person inflatable tent which is ideal for families.

Setting up the Stradbroke 4 TC Air with Owen Wright

Words by Owen Wright.

“Before first using the inflatable tent, I got a bit of a rundown on what to do with the set up, but I completely forgot and when I was unpacking the bag, I thought “well it will put the claim that it’s easy to the test”. I unpacked it and plugged in the air pump and off it went. It was set up in less than 10mins - my wife was amazed as usually I’m bugging her for the instructions and getting frustrated, but I didn’t ask once. This tent is foolproof.

My wife and kids loved the inside of the tent. We couldn’t believe how big it was. It felt a bit of luxury compared to other tents I’ve used. There were only four of us in the six-person tent. I don’t think we could have enough kids to fill the tent though. It’s so spacious.

One of the concerns I had was whether the air tubes would be sturdy, but they were absolutely perfect. We had strong wind there one day and they didn’t budge. I was nervous about the pack down because you always hear about how annoying packing up is. There are four air tube valves and all I did was unscrew those and the tent collapsed in on itself. I couldn’t remember how I unpacked it or what the fold technique was, so I folded it in half and rolled it up. It fit so easily into the bag and off I went. I seriously can’t believe how easy it made the camping experience for me and my wife, usually that’s the most stressful part!

I could never go back to a poled tent. I have one in the garage that won’t be coming back out! I would recommend this tent for families and any bloke who is trying to get their misses to go and see the beauty of camping. This tent is a winner!”
