REACH (Registration, Evaluation and Authorisation of Chemical Substances)
The REACH Regulation (EC) No. 1907/2006 is the European Union’s framework for the registration, evaluation, authorisation, and restriction of chemical substances. It has been in force since 2007 and applies to substances on their own, in mixtures, and in articles.
The regulation aims to ensure a high level of protection of human health and the environment. It promotes the safe use of chemicals, encourages the substitution of hazardous substances with safer alternatives, and improves transparency and knowledge regarding chemical properties and uses.
ECHA Candidate List – Obligation to Inform (Article 33)
Under Article 33 of the REACH Regulation, suppliers are required to inform recipients about substances of very high concern (SVHC) present in articles above a concentration of 0.1% (w/w). Relevant information, including safe use instructions where applicable, must be communicated along the supply chain.
SVHCs are identified and published on the ECHA Candidate List, which is updated regularly (typically twice per year). The latest version is available on the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) website.
