Dometic video systems – Focus on: General Safety Regulation Phase 2 (GSR2)
GSR2, the second phase of the EU's General Safety Regulation No. 2019/2144, has introduced a whole set of safety standards for commercial vehicles aimed at further reducing the number of serious accidents on European roads. As of July 2024, safety equipment like pedestrian and cyclist warning systems, reversing assistants and blind spot information systems are mandatory not only for the approval of new types of vehicles, but for all new vehicles to be registered. Dometic PerfectView video technology enables smart solutions to comply with the new legal requirements.
Which types of vehicles are affected?
GSR2 is valid for all vehicles of class M2/3 (passenger transport) and class N2/3 (goods transport) sold in the European Union, even for those imported from other countries. The safety regulation covers all commercial vehicles with a gross weight over 3.5 tonnes.
What’s mandatory?
Under the General Safety Regulation, the following safety features are mandatory for new vehicle registrations (phase 2 as of July 2024):
Moving Off Information System (MOIS) – sub-directive ECE R159
Blind Spot Information System (BSIS) – sub-directive ECE R151
Intelligent Speed Assist (ISA)
Driver Drowsiness & Alertness Warning (DDAW) – Regulation (EU) 2021/1341
Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS)
Reversing Information System (REIS) – sub-directive ECE R158

R151 – turning assistance
Many vehicle manufacturers are using radar systems to meet the R151 regulation. The key benefits of this technology are the wide reach and the good performance in poor visibility. An obvious drawback is the lack of visual information. This is where our blind spot camera system BVS7100 and the single camera CAM1000 can be a useful add-on: Drivers can exactly see on the monitor what is going on in the blind spot area.
R159 – moving off information system
Moving Off Information Systems help drivers in becoming aware of pedestrians or cyclists who might be hidden from their direct view when the vehicle is starting off. Here again vehicle manufacturers are mainly using auditory warning solutions. We believe that live images provided by an additional front or birdview camera can be a major contribution to safety.
R158 – reversing assistance
Besides non-visual systems using ultrasound sensors or radar technology, camera-based reversing assistance systems have been well established in the market for many years. The GRS2 allows all of these concepts, with different sub-regulations to be applied.
The requirements on camera-based reversing assistants are covered by regulation ECE R158. However, the original equipment provided by the vehicle manufacturer may, at times, not be optimally adapted to the customer needs or the application at hand. For example, the camera position may not exactly fit the superstructure or attachment added later on. Or the final application may require vehicle-specific adapters and extension cables.
