Best overland rack
"I had a Rhino Rack platform rack on my FJ and thought that rack was just fine…had tons of gear attached to it, but now after having this FrontRunner rack i can say i was totally wrong. Rhino rack doesn’t understand how many mistakes they made in their design and how hard they make it in people to use a platform rack. Here’s why: - The front under rack, first and foremost has side to side slats- this is of paramount importance to fitting attachment points to the slats as it allow you to space the width as needed. You can’t do that with front to back running slats unless you’re ok with you’re gear being sideways. - The FrontRunner slats are super solid heavy duty gauge material and can support a great deal of weight both over the slat itself but also by way of the channel that holds the attachment accessory. Rhino Rack’s slats by comparison are super thin gauge material and i torqued the channel groove quite a few times on those slats over tightening or for some other reason. Super annoying and just very poor design. This isnt possible on the channels of frontrunner slats, they’re thick and durable. - To attach things to a channel only requires a 13mm head bolt on the FrontRunner slat that slides easily and snugly, upside down in the channel creating a lock on the head. From there you just slide your attachment accessory onto the bolt shaft and then tighten a nut onto that. Easy Peasy. Rhino Rack’s slats by comparison is upside down…the nuts go into the channel and you not only have to buy super expensive proprietary, large, channel wing nuts, but i was ALWAYS fussing with them trying to get them into place or accidentally screwing them in the wrong direction (they lock in one direction only). Total waste of time and money. I can’t say enough about how easy and stable things attach to this FronRunner rack. - The entire design is so well executed on this rack i find myself surprised over and over again by its simplicity, durability, and ease of use. I had an FJ cruiser completely outfitted as an overland survival vehicle and looking back now know how much time and energy i would have saved having a front runner rack instead. I have no intention of throwing RhinoRack under the bus but to make an example of how great this new rack is i used it by comparison because i can. I’ve owned both, have experienced both inside and out, and the difference is substantial!"
